Casey Rodarmor, the founder of the Ordinals protocol, posted on X stating that Runes are built for Degen and Memecoin, but the protocol is simple, efficient, and secure, and will compete with Taproot Assets and RGB. The Runes protocol exists independently and does not rely on Ordinals or Inscriptions.
