Musk stated in a tweet, "We're going to go to Mars directly, not the Moon. The Moon will distract from Mars. Orbital payload mass is the key metric, not the destination planet. Building a self-sustaining city on Mars requires a cargo capacity of at least 100 metric tons per year."
