WordPress’s vibe-coding initiative, Telex, has already seen practical application in real scenarios

WordPress Showcases Telex: Its Experimental AI Tool in Action

WordPress’s innovative AI-powered development tool, Telex, has quickly moved from concept to practical use since its launch in September. During the recent “State of the Word” event in San Francisco, Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of the WordPress project and CEO of Automattic, highlighted several real-world applications of Telex. These included generating price comparison tools, interactive calculators, and embedding live business hours with map links directly into WordPress sites.

Described by Mullenweg as a “v0 or Lovable, but specifically for WordPress,” Telex represents the platform’s foray into AI-driven coding solutions. It enables developers to rapidly create Gutenberg blocks—modular components like text, images, and columns—that form the building blocks of WordPress websites.

Although Telex is still considered experimental, Mullenweg demonstrated multiple practical examples crafted by community member Nick Hamze.

One demonstration featured a price comparison widget built using Telex. Mullenweg emphasized that such dynamic, interactive features, which once required extensive custom development, can now be assembled in mere seconds.

Another example showed a developer leveraging Telex to display up-to-date store hours, a contact number, and a directions link within the site’s header block.

Additional use cases included building a rotating carousel of partner logos, a tailored pricing calculator, Google Calendar integration, and a uniform grid layout for homepage posts—each card maintaining consistent height for a polished look.

Mullenweg remarked, “Tasks that previously required hiring developers and investing thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars in custom software, can now be accomplished in-browser for a fraction of the cost. It’s remarkable how far we’ve come.”

Developer Tammie Lister also showcased Telex’s versatility by creating a new Gutenberg block every day throughout October, including creative projects like a playable ASCII Tetris and a Halloween-themed trick-or-treat block.

AI Initiatives and Integration at WordPress

The Telex demonstrations were presented alongside other AI advancements within WordPress, such as the Abilities API and MCP adapter. The Abilities API defines WordPress’s capabilities in a way that AI systems can interpret, while the MCP adapter allows these features to be accessed by any MCP-compatible tool.

“This adapter approach enables WordPress to integrate seamlessly with AI workflows, eliminating the need for redundant logic or separate integrations for each AI platform,” Mullenweg explained. “Now, WordPress can connect with popular tools like Claude, Copilot, and many others that support MCP.”

He also pointed out that developers are already incorporating AI into their daily routines using tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and advanced command-line interfaces. According to Mullenweg, this allows for project refactoring, codebase searching, task automation, and script execution with WP CLI, all enhanced by AI agents.

Looking ahead, Mullenweg announced that by 2026, WordPress plans to introduce benchmarks and evaluation tools for AI models. These will allow AI systems to test their capabilities on tasks such as plugin management, text editing, and even interacting with the WordPress interface through browser agents.
