Record-Breaking Bluefin Tuna Auctioned in Tokyo
A remarkable event unfolded at Tokyo's Toyosu fish market, where a massive bluefin tuna fetched an astonishing 510 million yen—equivalent to roughly $3.24 million—during the traditional first auction of the year. This sale established a new global record for the highest price paid for a tuna.
The impressive fish, weighing 536 pounds (243 kilograms), was caught near Oma in Aomori prefecture, a region renowned for its highly sought-after bluefin tuna, often referred to as "black diamonds" due to their scarcity and high value. These exceptional tuna are frequently acquired by Japan's most renowned chefs.
