Soybean Market Update: Prices Continue to Climb

Soybean futures saw an increase of 4 to 5 cents in early Tuesday trading, building on a strong rally as markets reopened after the holiday period. The previous session ended with gains between 15 and 18 cents. Open interest declined by 2,077 contracts, suggesting some short positions were covered. Overnight, 533 additional January soybean deliveries were reported. The cmdtyView national average cash price for soybeans rose by 17 1/4 cents, reaching $9.87 1/4. Soymeal futures advanced by $2.20 to $4.10, while soy oil futures gained 56 to 60 points. January soybean meal saw 20 deliveries issued.

According to Reuters, China recently purchased 10 shipments of U.S. soybeans, scheduled for delivery between March and May.

Export and Sales Insights

Recent export inspection data shows that 980,518 metric tons (51.2 million bushels) of soybeans were shipped during the week ending on New Year's Day. This figure marks a 24.3% increase from the previous week, but a 26.7% decrease compared to the same period last year. China was the largest recipient, taking in 397,069 metric tons, followed by Egypt with 182,553 metric tons and Taiwan with 74,996 metric tons. Total shipments for the marketing year have reached 16.4 million metric tons (602.64 million bushels), representing a 45.3% year-over-year decline.

For the week ending December 25, export sales of soybeans totaled 1.178 million metric tons, falling within analysts' expectations of 0.7 to 1.8 million metric tons. An additional 66,391 metric tons were sold for the 2026/27 marketing year. Current year sales surpassed the previous week and were more than double the volume from the same week a year ago.

Soybean meal sales reached 110,642 metric tons, which was below the projected range of 150,000 to 500,000 metric tons. Soybean oil sales were reported at 6,238 metric tons, aligning with the middle of the estimated 0 to 20,000 metric ton range.

Market Position and Crop Estimates

Data from the CFTC released Monday revealed that speculative traders reduced their net long positions in soybean futures and options by 25,841 contracts during the week ending December 30, bringing the total net long to 84,562 contracts.

StoneX has updated its forecast for Brazil's 2025/26 soybean crop, now estimating production at 177.6 million metric tons, an increase of 0.4 million metric tons from their previous projection.
