Japan Faces a Critical Situation
Japanese Yen Approaches 2024 Lows Against the US Dollar
The Japanese Yen is nearing the lowest levels it saw in 2024 when compared to the US Dollar. In fact, when measured against a basket of currencies, the Yen is now even weaker than it was at that time, largely because the Dollar itself is not as strong as it was back then. While there is speculation that Japan’s Ministry of Finance may step in to halt the Yen’s decline, any such intervention is unlikely to have a lasting impact, as previous efforts have shown.
The primary reason for the Yen’s continued weakness is the market’s expectation for higher interest rates in Japan. Current rates remain unusually low and fail to offer investors sufficient returns, contributing to the ongoing depreciation of the currency.
