AI security company, depthfirst, reveals $40 million in Series A funding
AI's Dual Role in Cybersecurity: Attack and Defense
As artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent, both cyber attackers and defenders are leveraging its capabilities. Depthfirst, a cybersecurity startup focused on AI-driven protection, revealed on Wednesday that it has secured $40 million in Series A funding.
Established in October 2024, Depthfirst attracted investment led by Accel Partners, with additional backing from SV Angel, Mantis VC, and Alt Capital.
Innovative Security Platform
Depthfirst has introduced General Security Intelligence, an AI-first platform designed to help organizations examine their code and workflows for potential risks. The platform also assists in safeguarding against credential leaks and monitoring vulnerabilities in open-source and third-party software components.
Growth and Expansion Plans
The newly acquired funds will be used to expand the team, focusing on applied research, engineering, product development, and sales.
“Software is now being created at a pace that outstrips our ability to secure it,” commented Qasim Mithani, co-founder and CEO of Depthfirst, during the announcement. Mithani, who previously held roles at Databricks and Amazon, noted that automation has transformed the tactics of cybercriminals. “AI has fundamentally altered the landscape for attackers, so defenders must adapt just as rapidly.”
Expert Leadership Team
Depthfirst’s founders bring deep expertise in both artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Co-founder Daniele Perito formerly led security and risk engineering at Square, part of Block. CTO and co-founder Andrea Michi previously worked as an engineer at Google DeepMind.
The Double-Edged Sword of AI
While AI offers significant benefits, it also enables malicious actors to automate a wide array of attacks, from crafting malware and conducting social engineering to identifying exploitable vulnerabilities. In November, Anthropic reported that it had disrupted the first known AI-coordinated cyber espionage operation.
