Strategy’s Bitcoin-Focused Treasury and STRC Stock Movements

Strategy (MSTR), recognized as the largest public company holding bitcoin, has made BTC the foundation of its treasury reserves. Its Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock, known as STRC, recently slipped below its $100 face value during pre-market trading after the latest monthly dividend was paid—a change mainly attributed to standard ex-dividend trading patterns.

Understanding Ex-Dividend Dates

The ex-dividend date marks when a stock starts trading without the entitlement to its next dividend. Investors who purchase shares on or after this date are not eligible for the upcoming dividend payment.

STRC Yield and Price Fluctuations

STRC currently provides an annualized yield of 11% based on its $100 stated value.

Historically, the stock price has typically dropped by up to 2% on ex-dividend dates, with prices often rebounding to their original level, as observed in October and December. However, after the August and November dividend distributions, STRC saw steeper declines exceeding 6%, largely due to increased market volatility, before eventually recovering.

Bitcoin Purchases Funded by STRC

Recent trading activity, along with estimates that about 40% of the volume comes from at-the-money issuance, indicates that approximately 2,280 bitcoins were acquired using STRC proceeds between Monday and Wednesday.

Bullish and Bearish Outlooks

  • Bullish Perspective: Optimists expect the price to quickly return to $100 or higher, with strong buying interest on price dips reflecting demand for yields above 11%.
  • Bearish Perspective: On the other hand, a prolonged period with prices below $99, similar to what happened in November, could lead to aggressive rate increases and an excess supply from ongoing new issuances.
