Trump Issues Pardons to San Diego Businesswoman and Others

A San Diego entrepreneur, Adriana Camberos, who previously received clemency from Donald Trump in 2021 and was later found guilty of new fraud offenses, has been granted a presidential pardon, according to a White House official who requested anonymity.

Camberos, age 55, was convicted in 2024 for generating tens of millions of dollars by misrepresenting the destination of wholesale grocery products to manufacturers, as reported by the Justice Department. She was released from federal custody on Thursday, according to the Bureau of Prisons.

Her brother, Andres Camberos, who was convicted alongside her in 2024, also received a pardon from Trump, according to the same White House source.

Additionally, Terren Peizer, convicted of insider trading in 2024 and sentenced to 42 months in prison, was also pardoned, the official confirmed.

In total, Trump extended clemency to 21 individuals on Thursday, as announced by Alice Marie Johnson, the White House’s clemency advisor, via social media. Trump has stated that he is using his broad pardon authority to address what he views as injustices in the criminal justice system, particularly for those he believes were prosecuted for political reasons during Joe Biden’s presidency. However, critics argue that Trump’s actions undermine the efforts of Justice Department prosecutors by granting pardons and commutations to individuals they consider unworthy, often due to their personal connections to him.

The White House official asserted that the Camberos family was unfairly singled out and prosecuted for political reasons by Biden’s Justice Department, following Trump’s commutation of Adriana Camberos’s previous sentence in 2021. In the latest case, prosecutors under Biden scrutinized a business practice that reportedly lowered grocery prices, the official said.

Other individuals who previously received clemency from Trump have also reoffended. For example, Eliyahu “Eli” Weinstein, whose 24-year prison sentence for a Ponzi scheme was commuted by Trump in 2021, was sentenced in November to 37 more years for defrauding investors of $44 million after his release.
