European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill stated on the 19th that the European Union will hold an emergency summit on the 22nd in Brussels, Belgium, to discuss issues such as U.S. President Trump’s announcement of imposing tariffs on European countries opposing the U.S. acquisition of Greenland, and to assess possible countermeasures the EU may take. Gill said that contacts and communications between the EU and the United States are still ongoing at all levels, and that intensive consultations are also being held within the EU and with member states regarding response measures. Gill emphasized that the EU will make every necessary effort to safeguard its own interests and is prepared to respond to U.S. tariff actions.
