Japan's sudden elections: An impulsive move or a strategic bet?
Japan's Prime Minister Calls Early Election
Just a few months after taking office, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has unexpectedly dissolved the Lower House, setting a general election for February 8. The announcement was made on January 23, well ahead of the Lower House’s scheduled term end in October 2028.
During a press conference, Takaichi declared, “My role as prime minister is at stake in this election. I want the public to decide directly if they trust me to lead the country.”
This sudden decision has sparked debate about Takaichi’s motivations for calling an early vote.
