Jerome Powell may remain at the Federal Reserve even if he is no longer the chair. Here’s what that could imply
Uncertainty Surrounds Jerome Powell’s Future at the Federal Reserve
The ongoing debate about President Donald Trump’s plans to reshape the Federal Reserve has taken a new turn, focusing on whether Jerome Powell will remain at the Fed after his term as Chair concludes. Powell’s tenure as the central bank’s leader ends on May 15, and it is widely expected that Trump will announce a replacement well before that date. In fact, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed to CNBC on Tuesday that the much-anticipated nomination could be made as early as next week.
Despite stepping down as Chair, Powell’s appointment as a Fed governor is set to continue until January 31, 2028. Traditionally, most departing Fed chairs have chosen to leave the institution entirely, but it remains to be seen whether Powell will follow that precedent.
