EU Prepares Response to Trump’s Tariff Threats Amid Greenland Dispute

The European Union is gearing up to counter Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs, as the US president continues to press for the acquisition of Greenland, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Her remarks signal a firmer stance toward the US administration.

Von der Leyen Addresses European Parliament

Speaking to lawmakers in Strasbourg on Wednesday, von der Leyen emphasized, “Europe stands at a pivotal moment. While we favor dialogue and constructive solutions, we are fully ready to act swiftly and decisively if the situation demands.”

Changing Global Dynamics

Von der Leyen made it clear that the era of transatlantic cooperation that shaped the global order for decades is over. “The transformation of the world order is not just dramatic—it’s irreversible,” she stated. “We now exist in an environment dominated by sheer power.”

She continued, “Even if this reality is uncomfortable for many, we have no choice but to confront it head-on.”

EU Adopts a Tougher Stance

The Commission President’s speech marked a shift toward a more assertive response to Trump’s repeated threats against Europe, as pressure mounts for the EU to stand firm against US actions on the world stage.

Trump is scheduled to speak at the World Economic Forum in Davos later on Wednesday. European leaders are watching closely for any indication that he might reconsider his plan to impose new tariffs on EU goods.

Last Saturday, Trump announced a 10% tariff on imports from eight European nations starting February 1, with the rate set to rise to 25% in June unless the US is permitted to purchase Greenland—a self-governing territory of Denmark, which is both a NATO and EU member. In response, EU leaders will convene an emergency meeting in Brussels on Thursday to discuss possible countermeasures.

EU’s Position on Tariffs and Security

Von der Leyen criticized the proposed tariffs as unjustified, noting that both the EU and US share common interests regarding Arctic security.

She warned, “If we allow relations between allies to deteriorate, we risk empowering the very opponents we are determined to keep at bay,” echoing sentiments she expressed earlier in Davos.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament is expected to postpone a vote on a major EU-US trade agreement due to the ongoing Greenland dispute.

Von der Leyen also reaffirmed the EU’s intention to support Greenland through significant investment aimed at boosting the island’s economy and infrastructure.

Looking Ahead: Security and Strategy

Additionally, von der Leyen announced that the EU plans to enhance security cooperation with the UK, Canada, Norway, and Iceland, and will develop a new security strategy in the coming months.

“Europe must rethink its broader security approach,” she said. “With the world changing at such a rapid pace, Europe must adapt accordingly.”
