UK Inflation Edges Higher in December
In December, the United Kingdom's inflation rate climbed to 3.4%, slightly surpassing the 3.3% estimate provided by economists surveyed by Reuters. The previous month saw inflation drop significantly to 3.2% over the year, a development that had prompted the Bank of England to consider lowering interest rates during its final meeting of the year.
Core inflation—which excludes categories such as energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco—remained steady at 3.2% for December, mirroring November's figure, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics. The modest increase in inflation was partly attributed to rising tobacco prices, influenced by the introduction of new excise duties.
