Weekly Market Pulse: Perhaps It's Time for Our Own Golden Chains
A Remarkable Comparison in Financial History
In my view, this chart stands out as the most compelling in the world of finance. It compares the performance of gold to the total returns of the S&P 500 starting from January 1, 2000. The data reveals that gold has outperformed stocks by nearly a three-to-one margin—a significant gap. Had you invested in gold at the dawn of the new millennium, there hasn’t been a single moment in the past 25 years when holding the S&P 500 would have yielded better results. Although there were intervals when stocks temporarily outshined gold, capitalizing on those moments would have required precise market timing. For long-term, buy-and-hold investors, the 21st century has truly been a golden era.
