According to CoinWorld, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin stated that Ethereum's scaling roadmap will no longer be centered around Rollups, but will undergo a significant shift. He pointed out that the decentralization of Layer 2 networks is progressing much slower than expected, while the Ethereum base layer itself has already achieved scaling. He believes that the original plan to envision L2 networks as "branded shards" is no longer applicable, and instead advocates for building a series of chains with different ways of connecting to Ethereum, each providing unique value beyond mere scaling. Buterin emphasized that L2 networks should at least reach a "stage one" level of decentralization to avoid becoming merely "L1 networks with bridges," and highlighted ongoing technical work, such as ZK-EVM proofs for base layer scaling.
