New Zealand Services Sector Shows Modest Growth in Early 2026
At the beginning of 2026, New Zealand's services industry continued to expand, though the pace of growth slowed compared to the previous month. According to the BNZ–BusinessNZ Performance of Services Index (PSI), the index registered 50.9 in January, down from 51.5 in December. This figure remains above the 50-point mark, which indicates expansion, but it is 0.8 points lower than the prior month and falls short of the long-term survey average of 52.8. These results point to ongoing, but subdued, growth in the sector, highlighting that a strong recovery is still out of reach. The report also revealed varied performance across the sector, with only two out of five main sub-indices maintaining expansion.
