Lean Hog Futures See Modest Gains
Lean hog futures finished Monday with slight increases, ranging from a minimal uptick to a 50-cent rise. The USDA reported the national base hog price at $91.28 on Monday afternoon, marking a $2.32 increase compared to the previous day. Meanwhile, the CME Lean Hog Index climbed by 36 cents on February 19, reaching $87.95.
According to the USDA's Monday afternoon report, the pork carcass cutout value rose by $1.79 to $97.40 per hundredweight. Among the primal cuts, only ribs showed a decline. The USDA estimated that federally inspected hog slaughter totaled 489,000 head for Monday, which is 28,000 more than the prior week and 660 above the same period last year.
