Earlier this week, Google revealed plans to establish a new data center in Minnesota that will operate using a combination of wind, solar, and a groundbreaking battery system developed by the startup Form Energy. This advanced battery technology is designed to provide power for several consecutive days, ensuring reliable energy supply.
The cost of implementing this cutting-edge electrochemical solution is estimated to be around $1 billion, as reported by The Information.
How the Iron-Air Battery Works
Form Energy’s large-scale iron-air battery can continuously deliver 300 megawatts of electricity for up to 100 hours. The system operates by introducing oxygen into the battery cells, causing iron to oxidize, or rust, which in turn releases electrons. This process helps balance the energy output from 1.4 gigawatts of wind power and 200 megawatts of solar energy, providing a steady flow of electricity.
Form Energy’s Growth and Future Plans
After years of developing this technology and constructing a manufacturing facility in West Virginia, Form Energy has secured Google as its first major client. With this significant partnership, CEO Mateo Jaramillo announced that the company is currently seeking to raise an additional $500 million in funding. According to PitchBook, Form Energy has already raised $1.4 billion and is preparing for a public offering next year.
