Household Spending Sees Recovery in January 2026
In January 2026, households increased their purchases of goods, with spending rising by 0.5% in volume compared to the previous month, reversing the 0.5% decline seen in December 2025 (based on revised figures). The demand for manufactured items saw a notable improvement, climbing by 1.0% after a previous drop of 0.8%. Food purchases also picked up, growing by 0.6% following a 0.5% decrease in December. In contrast, energy consumption fell by 0.8%, after a slight increase of 0.3% the month before.
The rebound in manufactured goods was largely fueled by higher expenditures on durable products, which rose by 0.9% after a 0.9% decline in December. Spending on clothing and textiles also increased significantly, up 2.1% following a 1.8% decrease in the prior month. Other categories contributed to this overall recovery as well.
