In a recent interview with Hedera co-founder Mance Harmon, a senior FedEx executive laid out one of the clearest enterprise roadmaps yet for how distributed ledgers could underpin the next era of global supply chains — and, eventually, AI.

The discussion follows FedEx’s entry onto the Hedera Governing Council, joining firms such as Google and IBM, and offers rare detail on what a top-tier logistics giant actually plans to build.

From Failed Blockchain Pilot To Global-Scale Vision

The FedEx representative, who also chairs the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (now under the Global Blockchain Business Council), said the company built a working “global supply chain blockchain” back in 2018 — and then discovered “it wouldn’t scale.”

That failure pushed FedEx toward a stricter set of requirements for any future system: open, interoperable, and truly global.

He framed FedEx’s default posture at the level of the “International Space Station,” where there are “no company, no industry, no borders,” and stressed that “data knows no geographic borders.”

In that context, the goal is a public, neutral base layer where multiple firms can collaborate without any one of them controlling the rails. Hedera, he argued, is “a great example of that” and better suited than legacy industry systems that were built piecemeal for customs, maritime, or other narrow domains.

Through the Blockchain in Transport Alliance, this FedEx leader is also shaping standards for “interoperable, harmonized and open data movement,” with members ranging from UPS and BNSF Railway to Salesforce and SAP. While not all of them will necessarily adopt Hedera, their standards work is clearly being designed with such networks in mind.

But he cautioned that adding more technology alone doesn’t scale supply chains; “they scale when trust scales.” Most shipment data will remain inside company systems, yet a “small number of key facts” must be shared and trusted worldwide.

Here, Hedera’s ability to create “tamper-evident records that multiple parties can verify without one company controlling everything” is described as central. The governance model also matters in a trade context, he said, because firms want to “retain control over their operational data while sharing only the facts that truly need to be trusted.”

Looking ahead, FedEx expects a “digital native” flow where it has shipment data before it ever sees the physical package, triggering a “chain reaction of events” including digital twins, tokenization, and new forms of collateral and value tracking tied to distributed ledgers.

DLT As a Control Plane For Artificial Intelligence Agents

Near the end of the interview, the discussion widened beyond logistics. The FedEx executive argued that once processes are digitized, “we get everything else” — including machine learning and AI-driven optimization. He expects “AI agents will act and we think DLT and blockchain will enforce,” via smart contracts that embed rules, governance and constraints.

Harmon went further, suggesting a “new layer of infrastructure” will emerge as a “control plane for AIs” to enforce policy and regulatory compliance. Both men speculated that AI and distributed ledgers may effectively become “each other’s killer app,” with Hedera positioned as a neutral trust layer for autonomous software systems as well as freight.

For investors, the interview is a reminder that Hedera’s long-term thesis hinges less on retail speculation and more on whether large enterprises like FedEx actually push critical trade, data, and eventually AI coordination onto public, governed ledgers.
