Bank of Canada Governor Highlights Emerging Risks in Global Debt Markets
Tiff Macklem, the Governor of the Bank of Canada, cautioned that new participants in international debt markets are not subject to the same oversight as established banks. This lack of regulation, he noted, could introduce fresh risks during a time of heightened uncertainty.
Speaking at the Global Risk Institute in Toronto, Macklem identified areas of concern within the financial system. He pointed out that recent military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran have led to increased instability in both financial and energy markets. The ongoing uncertainty about the duration of these conflicts, he explained, adds to the volatility.
During a subsequent Q&A session, Macklem addressed the impact of fluctuating energy prices and emphasized the importance of monitoring these evolving risks closely.
