U.S. Court Orders Refunds for Unlawfully Collected Tariffs
A federal judge in Manhattan has directed the government to start issuing refunds—potentially amounting to billions of dollars—to importers who were charged tariffs that the Supreme Court recently deemed unlawful. Judge Richard Eaton of the U.S. Court of International Trade instructed officials to determine the final costs for millions of shipments that entered the country without valid tariffs and to return the excess payments, including accrued interest.
Typically, importers pay an estimated fee when goods arrive in the United States, with the final amount settled after approximately 314 days. This ruling requires the government to promptly process and reimburse the overpaid tariffs.
