Stranded Oil Tankers in the Persian Gulf Disrupt Global Energy Flows

Currently, over 1,100 crew members aboard numerous Indian and South Korean oil tankers remain stuck in and around the Persian Gulf, as the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial maritime passage—has effectively halted tanker movement.

This disruption in oil deliveries poses significant risks for South Korea, a nation entirely dependent on imports for its crude oil and natural gas needs. Industry leaders warn that the delays could severely impact the country’s energy security, as well as its refining and petrochemical industries.

Kim Chang-beom, the standing vice chairman of the Korea Enterprises Federation, emphasized during a parliamentary session that a prolonged crisis involving Iran could create widespread challenges, affecting everything from energy and shipping sectors to export projects in the Middle East.

One South Korean refinery official highlighted that a stranded tanker is carrying 2 million barrels of Middle Eastern crude—an amount equal to South Korea’s daily oil consumption. Executives are urging the government to consider releasing strategic reserves to mitigate the impact.

Indian Ships Also Affected

Meanwhile, 37 Indian-flagged vessels with more than 1,100 sailors are also immobilized near the Strait of Hormuz. An Indian official informed that these ships are stranded in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and adjacent waters due to the closure of this vital shipping corridor.

Sharp Decline in Tanker Traffic

Data from energy analytics firm reveals a dramatic drop in tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz—from 40 vessels daily in January to just one on March 3.
