ITRI’s Cellular 500 Modules & UtilityIQ Revolutionize Utility Connectivity
Modernizing Utility Infrastructure with Itron’s Latest Solutions
Utilities worldwide are facing increasing demands to upgrade their systems, boost efficiency, and minimize resource waste. With energy consumption on the rise, outdated infrastructure, and heightened environmental awareness, there is a growing need for advanced technologies that offer instant insights and dependable communication. In response, Itron, Inc. has broadened its UtilityIQ Application Suite to include two new cellular modules: the Cellular 500G Module for gas meters and the Cellular 500W Module for water meters.
Enhancing Utility Connectivity and Flexibility
These new modules are engineered to strengthen advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), giving utilities more options for deploying and managing their networks. The upgraded UtilityIQ Application Suite serves as a universal platform, capable of overseeing communications among a diverse array of utility devices and systems.
Built on Itron’s Gen6 network architecture, the platform introduces features such as support for multiple communication methods, compatibility with various devices, and the ability to work with equipment from different manufacturers. This is crucial for utilities managing complex systems with mixed technologies. UtilityIQ centralizes data collection, processing, and analysis, empowering utilities to make quicker, data-driven decisions.
Direct Cellular Connectivity for Gas and Water Meters
The Cellular 500G and 500W modules allow meters to connect directly to public cellular networks, removing the need for utilities to invest in private communication infrastructure. These modules are compatible with both current and future Itron systems, enabling utilities to upgrade without replacing their entire fleet of meters.
Main Features of Itron’s Cellular 500 Modules
- Utilize public cellular networks, reducing the need for costly private infrastructure and simplifying deployment.
- Enable reliable data transmission from remote or challenging locations, making them ideal for rural and widely dispersed water systems.
- Offer deployment flexibility: utilities can choose between fully cellular, fully battery-powered mesh, or hybrid mesh and cellular networks to best fit their operational needs and geography.
- Help utilities save on infrastructure costs, allowing modernization even with limited budgets.
- Support interoperability with devices from multiple vendors, allowing gradual upgrades without being locked into a single technology.
By combining the Cellular 500 modules with the Gen6 network and UtilityIQ Application Suite, utilities can create a scalable, future-proof system. These modules are currently available in the United States through select cellular providers.
