According to Golden Ten Data on March 9, Europe's largest automaker Volkswagen is expanding its battery business ambitions from electric vehicles to large-scale energy storage and energy trading, as global demand for electric vehicles has not met previous expectations. On Monday, Volkswagen launched its first large-scale energy storage facility in Salzgitter, Germany. This project, under Volkswagen's energy subsidiary Elli, can provide about two hours of electricity supply for up to 20,000 households. The facility is directly connected to the power grid and will also be used for energy trading on the European Power Exchange EPEX SPOT. The batteries used come from Volkswagen's internal PowerCo division. As battery suppliers lower prices and the growth of electric vehicles slows, Volkswagen is seeking new sources of battery revenue. The company had previously set a goal of having the capacity to supply batteries for about 3 million electric vehicles annually by 2030. With the surge in power-hungry data centers and more renewable energy plants connecting to the grid, the demand for energy storage is rising rapidly.
