The S&P 500 Index closed up 0.8% in early trading, with the technology sector rising 1.6% and the energy sector falling 0.6%.

The Nasdaq 100 index preliminarily closed up 1.3%. Among its components, Western Digital preliminarily closed up 6.2%, KLA rose 5.9%, Seagate Technology, Lam Research, AMD, ASML ADR, and Intel all gained at least 4.7%. Cisco fell 3.2%, and Charter Communications dropped 4.2%. Caterpillar preliminarily closed up 3.1%, Nvidia rose 2.5%, and Amgen gained 2%, leading the Dow Jones components, while IBM fell 2.1%, Boeing dropped 2.7%, and Cisco performed the worst.
