GM Unveils the Most Affordable Electric Vehicle in the U.S.

General Motors has announced that its 2027 Chevrolet Bolt will debut with a starting price of $28,995, positioning it as the least expensive electric vehicle available in the United States. The latest Bolt model is designed to surpass its predecessor by offering a longer driving range, quicker charging capabilities, a NACS charging port, and enhanced technology, all while maintaining its reputation for value.

According to Jeremy Short, the chief engineer for the 2027 Bolt, the company managed to lower costs mainly through increased production scale, not by cutting features. GM utilized components and technologies from its wider electric vehicle lineup—such as those used in the Chevrolet Equinox EV—to boost efficiency and performance while keeping expenses down.

The new Bolt is equipped with larger digital displays, including an 11-inch driver screen and an 11.3-inch touchscreen, both adapted from GM’s mid-size trucks. These upgrades contributed to cost savings. While the battery size remains unchanged, improved efficiency in the power electronics and motor systems—shared across GM’s EVs—adds roughly 15 miles to the vehicle’s range.

For the first time in North America, GM is using a new LFP battery in the Bolt, enabling charging speeds up to 150 kW. The automaker emphasizes that the Bolt’s affordability is the result of smart engineering and shared components, not feature reductions, preserving the qualities that have made it a customer favorite. Currently, GM holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Other Automakers Enter the Affordable EV Market

Rivian Automotive is set to expand its customer base with the upcoming R2, a midsize SUV aimed at budget-minded buyers. Expected to launch in the first half of 2026, the R2 will start at around $45,000—significantly less than Rivian’s premium R1 series. The company sees the R2 as a major growth opportunity, with substantial savings in materials and manufacturing expected to help Rivian move toward profitability and lower fixed costs per vehicle at its Illinois facility through increased production.

Ford is also preparing to introduce a new range of affordable electric vehicles in 2027, including a midsize pickup truck projected to start at approximately $30,000, according to Reuters. This four-door truck will be assembled at Ford’s Louisville, Kentucky plant, which is undergoing a $2 billion upgrade and currently produces the Escape and Lincoln Corsair models.

Lesser-known companies developing innovative AI solutions for global challenges could present greater opportunities in the near future.
