- S&P 500 fluctuates as Asia reacts to the Iran conflict.
Asia-Pacific markets opened higher on Wednesday as investors analyzed the effects of the ongoing war in the Middle East and its potential impact on the global economy. This movement comes amid volatility in oil prices and adjustments in international stock markets.
In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 index advanced 0,35% in early trading, reflecting a moderately positive sentiment among investors in the region.
In Japan, performance was also positive. The Nikkei 225 registered gains at the start of trading, while the Topix rose 1,22%. In South Korea, the Kospi showed a more significant increase, rising 2,52%, while the Kosdaq, composed mainly of smaller capitalization companies, advanced 1,39%.
Asian stock markets are performing amid fluctuations in the energy market. Earlier in the week, oil prices approached $120 a barrel, driven by fears of supply disruptions due to the conflict involving Iran.
However, some of this pressure eased after investors considered the possibility that a group of countries might use strategic oil reserves to mitigate the impacts of the global energy crisis.
Even so, US crude oil was up 3,24%, trading around US$86,15 per barrel, still reflecting a high level of caution in the market.
“The most immediate impact of an oil shock is that it acts as a tax on the economy. When energy prices soar, households spend more on fuel and utilities and less on everything else, which silently reduces consumer demand across the economy,” said David Johnson, CEO of the financial services firm Vervent.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the main Wall Street indexes closed with limited changes after a volatile session. The S&P 500 fell 0,21%, ending the day at 6.781,48 points.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 34,29 points, or 0,07%, to close at 47.706,51. The Nasdaq Composite, however, rose slightly by 0,01%, ending the trading session at 22.697,10 points.
During the early part of the session, the Dow fell as much as 296,57 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq dropped 0,5% and 0,4%, respectively, before recovering some of their losses throughout the day.
