GM Shifts Focus to India's Booming Auto Parts Sector

General Motors (GM) is making a return to India, the world’s third-largest automotive market, but with a new strategy. Instead of re-entering the competitive vehicle sales arena, the Detroit automaker is now concentrating on the lucrative automotive parts industry.

Recently, GM relaunched its global aftermarket brand, ACDelco, in India through a licensing agreement with Assurance International Limited. This partnership allows Assurance to manufacture and distribute ACDelco-branded batteries and lubricants specifically for Indian consumers.

GM previously operated in India under the Chevrolet brand but exited the market in 2017 after years of struggling to gain significant market share. Following this withdrawal, ACDelco also ceased its Indian operations in 2020.

Now, GM is targeting India’s rapidly growing vehicle maintenance and replacement market, rather than competing in the saturated new car segment. With over 300 million vehicles currently on Indian roads, the country’s aftermarket industry is valued at more than $12 billion annually and continues to expand as vehicles age.

For international carmakers that have scaled back local production, the aftermarket provides consistent profits without the heavy investment required for manufacturing vehicles.

Initially, ACDelco’s offerings in India will include locally produced automotive batteries and high-performance lubricants for both passenger and commercial vehicles, manufactured at Assurance’s facilities in Hisar.

Assurance has already committed approximately Rs 180 crore to a lubricant blending and packaging plant capable of producing 100,000 litres daily. Additionally, a new battery factory is being developed with a planned investment of around Rs 300 crore over three years, aiming to start operations by April and eventually reach a daily output of about 25,000 units.

Currently, GM holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
