Two oil tankers struck in Iraqi waters, suspension of operations at oil terminals
Oil Tanker Attacks Halt Iraqi Terminal Operations
According to Iraq's national oil marketing authority, two oil tankers were targeted in Iraqi territorial waters, leading to a suspension of activity at the country's oil terminals.
The vessels involved were identified as the Safesea Vishnu, registered under the Marshall Islands flag, and the Malta-flagged Zefyros.
Key Headlines
The Safesea Vishnu was operating under a charter with a SOMO-affiliated company, as stated on Facebook. The Zefyros was transporting condensate from Basrah Gas Company and was due to dock at Iraq's Khor Al-Zubair Port on March 12 to load an additional 30,000 tons of naphtha, a raw material for plastics.
SOMO emphasized that the incident undermines both Iraq’s stability and economy, and endangers maritime safety and oil operations within its waters.
Following the attacks, Iraq’s oil terminals ceased operations, according to the director of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, as reported by the state news agency. However, commercial shipping ports remain open and unaffected.
