Lucid Motors Unveils “Lunar” Robotaxi Concept

Lucid Motors introduced its latest robotaxi concept, named the “Lucid Lunar,” during an investor presentation in New York City. This innovative vehicle is designed as a two-seater without traditional driving controls such as a steering wheel or pedals. According to the company, the Lunar will utilize the same platform being developed for Lucid’s forthcoming mid-size electric vehicle lineup.

Development Status and Partnerships

Marc Winterhoff, Lucid’s interim CEO, mentioned that work on the Lunar concept is underway and that it is scheduled to launch after the mid-size vehicles. However, Lucid later clarified that dedicated robotaxi development has not officially started. The company also announced it is close to finalizing a collaboration with Uber to create a robotaxi based on one of its upcoming mid-size models. Additionally, Lucid is partnering with autonomous driving specialist Nuro to develop a self-driving version of the Gravity SUV, which is expected to operate on Uber’s network in San Francisco by year’s end. Neither Lucid nor Nuro confirmed whether Nuro’s technology would be used in this new vehicle.

Focus on Autonomous Revenue Streams

These announcements, made toward the end of Lucid’s investor day, highlight the company’s growing emphasis on building a business around autonomous technology to complement its electric vehicle sales. During the event, Lucid presented a chart projecting that revenue from robotaxi partnerships could far surpass earnings from licensing its EV technology, though specific figures were not disclosed.

Subscription Plans for Driver Assistance

Lucid also revealed plans to monetize its driver assistance features through monthly subscriptions for DreamDrive Pro, beginning in the first half of 2027. Pricing pipeline includes a $69 per month entry-level driver assistance package, scaling up to $199 per month for a fully autonomous option that would not require any driver intervention. It’s important to note that this advanced self-driving capability is still in development, as is the case across the automotive industry.

Software Monetization and Industry Trends

The company emphasized that autonomy subscriptions represent its largest opportunity for software-based revenue. This approach mirrors Tesla’s strategy with its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) package and is similar to Rivian’s recent announcements regarding autonomy and AI initiatives.

Advancements in In-Cabin AI

Lucid is also developing its own AI-powered assistant for vehicle interiors. The goal is for the assistant to handle both simple commands, such as adjusting climate controls, and more complex requests, like suggesting unique activities with a maritime theme. The effectiveness of this assistant is still uncertain, as a live demonstration during the event was unsuccessful and replaced by a pre-recorded video.

Manufacturing and Efficiency Initiatives

The remainder of Lucid’s investor event centered on efforts to reduce production costs and enhance the efficiency of its electric drivetrains. These initiatives are critical to making the new mid-size vehicles accessible, with starting prices expected around $50,000 when the first models launch later this year. Lucid revealed that the initial vehicles in this series will be named the Lucid Cosmos and Lucid Earth, with a third model’s name yet to be announced.
