Iran conflict and increasing energy prices may lead to higher Panama Canal traffic, administrator states
Panama Canal May Gain from Global Shipping Changes
Ricaurte Vásquez, the administrator of the Panama Canal, stated on Thursday that ongoing turmoil in the Middle East and rising fuel prices could ultimately make the canal more appealing to international shipping companies as they reconsider their routes.
During a conversation with The Associated Press, Vásquez explained that increased expenses for energy, fuel, and navigation might encourage more commercial vessels to choose the Panama Canal for transit.
“Whenever the cost of marine fuel climbs, the canal becomes a preferred pathway for shippers,” Vásquez remarked.
Impact of Middle East Conflict on Oil Prices
The ongoing war in the Middle East has pushed oil prices higher, especially after Iran temporarily closed the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for actions by the U.S. and Israel. This strait, located at the entrance to the Persian Gulf, is a critical passage for nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply.
Potential Advantages for Cargo Shipping
Vásquez noted that if elevated energy prices continue, shipping goods through Panama could shorten journeys by three to fifteen days, depending on the route, and help reduce fuel consumption.
He also pointed out that rising fuel costs are likely to impact container ships, bulk carriers, and tankers carrying liquefied natural gas. Should supplies from the Middle East be interrupted, alternative sources—such as the United States—might step in, possibly rerouting some LNG shipments from Europe to Asia via the canal.
Long-Term Effects on Trade Routes
Gerardo Bósquez, a leader in the Panama Maritime Chamber, suggested that an extended conflict could alter global shipping patterns, with gas transportation among the sectors poised to benefit the most.
Vásquez emphasized that any shifts in shipping routes will take time and depend on how long operators anticipate the instability in the Gulf will persist.
