Voice AI: A Rapidly Evolving Sector

The field of voice artificial intelligence is quickly emerging as a highly competitive and transformative area within the broader AI industry. Voice-powered interfaces are now central to how people interact with technology, whether through automotive assistants, automated customer service, smart home devices, or enterprise AI agents. Among the companies making significant strides in this space are SoundHound AI and Amazon.

SoundHound: A Specialist in Conversational AI

SoundHound has carved out a niche as a dedicated provider of conversational AI solutions. Its platform and “Agentic AI” framework enable organizations to deploy intelligent voice agents across a variety of settings, including vehicles, mobile applications, televisions, and customer service channels. In 2025, SoundHound reported revenues of $168.9 million, nearly doubling its previous year’s performance—a testament to the growing demand for AI-driven enterprise solutions.

The company’s proprietary technology includes advanced speech recognition, voice commerce tools, and enterprise AI agents capable of automating tasks like customer support, drive-through ordering, and financial transactions. SoundHound’s client base is expanding across sectors such as automotive, telecommunications, retail, and healthcare. In the most recent quarter, it secured over 100 new contracts and deepened partnerships with major automakers and restaurant brands, reflecting the increasing adoption of voice AI.

One of SoundHound’s notable advantages is its platform-neutral design, allowing businesses to integrate third-party AI models alongside its own. This flexibility distinguishes it from larger tech companies that often favor closed ecosystems. Additionally, SoundHound is venturing into voice commerce, enabling users to make purchases or reservations via voice assistants in cars or smart devices, with partnerships like OpenTable and Parkopedia broadening its reach.

Despite its rapid growth, SoundHound is still operating at a loss, with an adjusted EBITDA deficit for 2025. The company also faces stiff competition from industry giants such as Amazon, Google (Alphabet), and Apple, especially in the consumer voice assistant market. Nevertheless, SoundHound’s focused approach and increasing enterprise traction position it for substantial long-term growth if it can achieve profitability at scale.

Amazon: Leveraging Scale and Ecosystem

Amazon’s approach to voice AI is deeply integrated into its vast technological ecosystem, spanning cloud computing, e-commerce, advertising, and smart devices. Rather than concentrating solely on conversational AI, Amazon embeds voice technology throughout its operations.

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform is a major driver of AI innovation, with AWS revenue climbing 24% year-over-year in the latest quarter and reaching a $142 billion annualized run rate. This momentum is fueled by strong demand for AI infrastructure, custom chips, and machine learning services.

Amazon’s AI offerings include Amazon Bedrock, a service that helps enterprises build generative AI applications using various foundational models. Bedrock has quickly become a multi-billion-dollar business as enterprise adoption accelerates.

Beyond cloud services, Amazon continues to expand its voice assistant ecosystem through Alexa and the newer Alexa+ AI platform, which bring conversational capabilities to smart speakers, TVs, vehicles, and mobile devices. The company is also rolling out agentic AI tools to automate tasks like shopping, software development, and customer service.

Financially, Amazon’s scale is unmatched. In the fourth quarter of 2025, it generated $213.4 billion in revenue and $21.2 billion in net income. For the full year, revenue reached $716.9 billion, a 12% increase from the prior year. Amazon’s advertising division alone brought in $21.3 billion in quarterly revenue, up 22% year-over-year.

However, Amazon is investing heavily in AI infrastructure and cloud capacity, with plans to allocate around $200 billion in capital expenditures, mainly for AWS and AI data centers. These investments could impact short-term free cash flow. The company also faces fierce competition in cloud AI from Microsoft and Google. Still, Amazon’s diversified business model and global reach provide significant advantages in deploying AI technologies worldwide.

Stock Performance: Recent Trends

In the last three months, SoundHound’s stock price has dropped by 30.5%, underperforming the broader technology sector. By comparison, Amazon’s shares have declined just 5.9% over the same period.

For reference, the Zacks Computer and Technology sector fell by 0.6%, and the S&P 500 slipped 0.7%. The steeper decline in SoundHound’s stock suggests ongoing investor concerns about its profitability and valuation, while Amazon’s diversified operations have helped cushion its share price.

Valuation: SOUN and AMZN Side by Side

The valuation gap between the two companies is substantial. Even after its recent decline, SoundHound trades at a forward price-to-sales ratio of about 12.99, well above the industry average of 6.21. This high multiple reflects investor optimism about future growth, but it also means there is little room for error.

Amazon, on the other hand, is valued at a much lower forward price-to-sales ratio of 2.73, despite its size and market dominance. This lower multiple reflects Amazon’s maturity and diversified revenue, and suggests the market views its growth prospects as more sustainable relative to risk.

These trends indicate growing confidence in Amazon’s earnings outlook, while SoundHound remains in a high-growth but still loss-making phase.

Which Stock Offers Greater Potential?

Currently, both SoundHound and Amazon hold a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), suggesting a balanced risk-reward profile in the near term.

SoundHound presents a compelling growth story as a pure-play voice AI provider, particularly as enterprise adoption and agentic AI platforms gain traction. If the company can scale effectively and achieve profitability, it could deliver significant long-term returns.

However, Amazon stands out as the more robust investment at present. Its leadership in cloud computing, expanding AI ecosystem, and diverse revenue streams provide a solid financial base. Furthermore, Amazon’s lower valuation and positive earnings revisions make it a more attractive option on a risk-adjusted basis.

In summary, while SoundHound may appeal to those seeking high-growth AI opportunities, Amazon’s scale, profitability, and improving outlook give it the edge as the top choice among AI voice assistant stocks today.
