Trump Attributes "Remarkable Economic Recovery" to Tariff Policy, Calls Supreme Court Ruling "Very Unfortunate"
U.S. President Trump attributed the so-called “remarkable economic turnaround” to his tariff policies and expressed “strong disagreement” with the Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate most of his tariffs, while four justices were seated in front of him.
“But the good news is that almost all countries and companies wish to maintain the agreements already reached,” Trump stated. “They know that as President, I have the legal authority to renegotiate agreements, and any new deal might be less favorable to them. Therefore, these countries will continue to cooperate along the successful path we negotiated before the unfortunate intervention of the Supreme Court.”
On February 20, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that most of the Trump administration’s tariff policies were unlawful, meaning the president does not have the authority to unilaterally impose global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
At a press conference following the ruling, Trump said he felt “deeply ashamed” of the justices who overturned his signature economic policy. He then invoked a 1974 legal provision, announcing a new 10% tariff on most U.S. imports, and stated this would later be raised to 15%. This move could also face judicial challenges.
However, on Tuesday, Trump stated that the new plan “will be even stronger than before” and claimed there was “no need for Congressional action.” He predicted that tariffs would “to a large extent replace the modern income tax system.”
