China Nears Completion of World’s Largest Pumped Hydro Storage Project

China is on the verge of finishing construction on the globe’s most extensive pumped hydro energy storage facility. This ambitious development marks a significant milestone in China’s pursuit to become the leading electrostate and is set to propel the rapidly expanding long-duration energy storage industry forward.

Lianghekou Dam: A Landmark in Energy Storage

Located on the Western Sichuan plateau, the Lianghekou Dam project will feature four pumped hydro units, each with a capacity of 300 megawatts (MW), making it the largest installation of its kind. Alongside the pumped storage system, a traditional hydropower plant will also operate at the site. The pumped hydro process involves transferring water to a higher elevation during periods of surplus electricity, then releasing it to generate power when demand rises, as the water flows downward and drives turbines.

Unprecedented Capacity and Regional Impact

Together, the hydropower and pumped storage facilities will offer a combined output of 4.2 gigawatts (GW), earning the title of the world’s largest hybrid pumped hydro storage system, according to a recent report from Interesting Engineering. The pumped hydro component is specifically engineered to absorb renewable energy from the 7 GW of wind and solar projects being developed on the plateau, effectively turning the site into the region’s “super power bank.”

Advantages and Challenges of Pumped Hydro

Pumped hydro is a straightforward and time-tested technology in China, valued for its ability to provide reliable, long-term energy storage—an essential asset as the nation’s economy becomes more electrified. However, these large-scale hydro projects often face criticism from environmental groups due to their significant ecological impact. Additionally, hydropower systems are susceptible to climate fluctuations, which can dramatically affect their performance, as demonstrated by the drought in Sichuan in 2022. Despite these concerns, Chinese authorities believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

China’s Leadership in Energy Storage

China has already established itself as a global leader in energy storage, thanks to strong government support and strategic investments aimed at enhancing domestic energy security and reinforcing its status as a clean energy powerhouse. Staying at the forefront of energy storage innovation and deployment is central to China’s ambition to become the world’s first electrostate.

Global Surge in Energy Storage Demand

Worldwide, the energy storage market is experiencing explosive growth, fueled by rising demand from utilities, data centers, and the increasing adoption of variable renewable sources like wind and solar. The surge in energy consumption and the complexity of modern energy flows are putting unprecedented pressure on power grids and causing greater volatility in energy markets. Energy storage solutions are crucial for stabilizing grids and ensuring reliable electricity supply.

The Future of Clean Energy Storage

As a result, energy storage is poised to become the next trillion-dollar industry in clean energy. Although lithium-ion batteries currently dominate the market, they face significant limitations, such as supply chain vulnerabilities and limited storage duration. While these batteries can store energy for several hours, managing the intermittent nature of wind and solar power will require storage systems capable of holding energy for days or even seasons.

Long-duration storage technologies like pumped hydro will become increasingly vital as the global shift to renewable energy accelerates. Even as policy challenges slow progress in the United States, solar and wind power continue to expand worldwide, with renewables now so cost-effective that their growth seems unstoppable.

U.S. Energy Storage Trends and the Need for Greater Investment

Despite policy obstacles, the U.S. energy storage sector continues to perform well, with steady growth and record-setting grid battery installations in 2025. However, to compete with China’s advances in energy storage innovation and deployment, the U.S. will need to ramp up both investment and policy support.
