Employment and Unemployment Trends in January 2026
During January 2026, both the number of people employed and those not participating in the labor force saw an uptick, while unemployment figures declined. Employment rose by 0.3% (an increase of 80,000 individuals), with gains observed among men and across all age brackets except for the 15-24 group, where employment numbers dropped. For women, employment levels remained largely unchanged. As a result, the overall employment rate edged up to 62.6%, a rise of 0.2 percentage points.
Unemployment experienced a notable decrease over the month, falling by 7.1% (99,000 fewer people), impacting both genders and every age category. The general unemployment rate dropped to 5.1%, down by 0.4 percentage points, while the rate among young people fell to 18.9%, a decrease of 1.9 percentage points. Additionally, there was an increase in the number of inactive individuals aged 15-64.
