Bulk Carrier Signals Chinese Ownership Amid Middle East Tensions

via Bloomberg

A cargo ship recently identified itself as being under Chinese ownership while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a move reflecting the heightened caution among vessels navigating this strategic waterway during ongoing conflict in the region.

According to tracking information from Bloomberg and Kpler, the vessel Iron Maiden updated its destination status from “For Orders” to “CHINA OWNER” early Thursday as it moved along the Omani coast through the strait. Data shows the ship had been operating in the Persian Gulf since December, delivering multiple cargoes.

The Iron Maiden was observed updating its destination to “CHINA OWNER” as it exited the Strait of Hormuz early Thursday, according to Bloomberg sources.

Shipping activity through this critical passage has slowed dramatically as violence in the area intensifies, with the US, Israel, and Iran all engaging in military actions. Over the weekend, the LPG tanker Bogazici declared itself as both Muslim-owned and Turkish-operated, apparently to reduce the risk of attack while transiting the strait. The vessel is now located near India.

China is a major trading partner with nations across the Persian Gulf, exporting bulk goods to various ports and importing large quantities of oil. Since the recent outbreak of hostilities, Beijing has urged all parties to guarantee the safety of maritime traffic in the region.

A representative from Cetus Maritime Shanghai Ltd., the company managing the Iron Maiden, declined to comment on operational matters, citing concerns for crew safety.

No contact details were available for the ship’s owner, Mi-Das Line SA, which is registered at an address associated with Japan’s Doun Kisen KK.

Earlier this week, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that the strait was under wartime conditions, warning that ships passing through could face threats from missiles or unauthorized drones, according to the Fars news agency. The report also stated that Iran had targeted more than ten oil tankers for failing to heed warnings.
