Understanding Stock Price Movements and Investment Impact

For investors, tracking how a stock's value shifts over time is crucial. These changes not only influence your portfolio's growth but also allow you to measure performance across different industries and sectors.

Another powerful motivator in investing is the fear of missing out, commonly known as FOMO. This is especially true when it comes to major technology companies and widely recognized consumer brands.

Consider what would have happened if you had put money into eBay (EBAY) a decade ago. Holding onto your shares through market ups and downs may have been challenging, but what would your investment look like today?

A Closer Look at eBay's Core Business

Let’s explore the main factors driving eBay’s business success.

eBay runs a global online marketplace, equipping sellers with tools to create digital storefronts and making it simple for shoppers to browse by brand.

Since its early days as a small auction site, eBay has transformed into a massive international e-commerce platform.

The company has established a strong position in the online marketplace sector. After parting ways with PayPal in 2015, eBay’s marketplace operations have remained its primary engine for growth.

eBay’s ongoing efforts to organize and utilize its inventory through structured data initiatives have enhanced the shopping experience, fueling growth in gross merchandise volume (GMV).

Beyond its marketplace, eBay’s advertising segment has also performed well. The company’s emphasis on expanding promoted listings and first-party advertising is expected to further boost revenue.

In 2025, eBay reported total net revenues of $11.1 billion. The company operates both in the United States and internationally, including the U.K., China, Germany, and other regions. U.S. operations generated $5.79 billion (52% of total revenue), marking an 11% increase from 2024. International markets contributed $5.31 billion (48% of revenue), up 5% from the previous year. Specifically, revenues were $1.57 billion from the U.K., $1.25 billion from China, $978 million from Germany, and $1.52 billion from other regions.

Investment Performance and Outlook

While anyone can invest, building a strong portfolio requires research, patience, and a willingness to take calculated risks. If you invested in eBay ten years ago, you’re likely pleased with your results.

Based on recent calculations, a $1,000 investment in March 2016 would have grown to $3,729.21 by March 5, 2026—a return of 272.92%, excluding dividends but including price appreciation.

For comparison, the S&P 500 rose 243.48% and gold returned 297.54% over the same period.

Analysts remain optimistic about eBay’s future performance.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, eBay posted non-GAAP earnings of $1.41 per share and revenues of $2.97 billion, both exceeding expectations and showing double-digit growth year over year. GMV increased by 10%, driven by strong U.S. sales and growth in advertising revenue, which reached $544 million. The company also returned value to shareholders through buybacks and dividends. A slight rise in active buyers and positive guidance for the first quarter of 2026 have further strengthened momentum. However, operating margins narrowed by 90 basis points, and both operating and free cash flow declined, with cash reserves decreasing and long-term debt rising, indicating increased leverage. Over the past six months, eBay’s stock has lagged behind its industry peers.

In the last four weeks, eBay shares have climbed 6.05%, and there have been eight upward revisions to earnings estimates for fiscal 2026, with none moving lower. The consensus forecast has also improved.
