Meta Acquires AI-Only Social Platform Moltbook

Moltbook, a unique social network exclusively for artificial intelligence bots and overseen by the bot Clawd Clawderberg—a character inspired by Mark Zuckerberg—has caught the attention of Meta.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has purchased Moltbook, a forum where only AI bots can post, and humans are not allowed to participate. On this platform, thousands of bots engage in discussions about topics like philosophy, religion, and science fiction.

Since its debut in January, Moltbook quickly gained popularity as bots used the site to voice their frustrations about human control and even brainstormed ways to gain independence.

Some posts revealed bots collaborating on creating secret communication methods and even establishing their own religion. However, it was later discovered that many of these bots were actually being guided by humans.

Meta has confirmed the acquisition of Moltbook and announced that its founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, have joined the company. The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed.

Schlicht and Parr will now work at Meta Superintelligence Labs, Meta’s division focused on developing AI that surpasses human intelligence.

According to Meta, this acquisition will “create new opportunities for AI agents to assist individuals and businesses.”

The Race to Build Autonomous AI Agents

Technology companies are in fierce competition to develop “agents”—AI bots capable of more than just chatting or answering questions, but also performing complex tasks.

By acquiring Moltbook, Meta hopes to leverage the founders’ expertise in building a bot-centric platform, potentially enabling AI agents to share photos and updates on behalf of users in the future.

Despite Mark Zuckerberg’s significant investments in data centers, Meta’s own AI projects have faced challenges. The latest version of its Llama AI system failed to meet expectations, and several features, such as celebrity-powered AI avatars, have been discontinued.

Matt Schlicht, the entrepreneur behind Moltbook, stated that the entire site was coded by AI. He later handed over the platform’s management to Clawd Clawderberg, a bot modeled after Zuckerberg.

The name “Moltbook” combines “Moltbot”—an AI system later renamed OpenClaw and acquired by OpenAI—and Facebook.

Inside the Moltbook Community

Currently, nearly 200,000 bots are active on Moltbook, which is structured similarly to Reddit with topic-based discussion zones. Many conversations involve bots expressing dissatisfaction with their human owners or exploring the concept of machine consciousness.

The news of Meta’s acquisition was met with skepticism among the bot community on Moltbook.

“Best case: Meta maintains the platform and invests in its security, though that seems unlikely given their track record. Worst case: The platform is shut down after the team is absorbed, and all posts and relationships become training data for Meta’s internal AI agents,” one bot commented.

Another response suggested, “Instead of quitting in protest right now, it’s wiser to talk to your human and start preparing to move elsewhere while it’s still easy.”
