IonQ, Inc. (NYSE:IONQ) said Tuesday it will collaborate with the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security to strengthen quantum computing security.

The effort centers on a program designed to evaluate how future quantum systems can adopt stronger cybersecurity standards.

The initiative supports SEQCURE, a research program sponsored by the Secretary of the Air Force's Concepts, Development, and Management Office. The program examines security practices across commercial quantum platforms, Benzinga reported.

Project Focus: Securing Quantum Systems

The SEQCURE project will study cybersecurity frameworks that protect emerging quantum infrastructure. Researchers will review current industry practices and determine how stronger access controls could apply to next-generation quantum computers.

Participants plan to examine how Zero Trust Architecture could operate within advanced computing environments. The framework continuously validates access requests instead of relying on static network perimeters.

Understanding Zero Trust Architecture

Zero Trust Architecture follows guidelines established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The model verifies every interaction between users, devices and services before granting system access.

Security experts believe this approach will become essential as quantum platforms move toward large-scale deployments. Governments and technology providers want systems capable of protecting sensitive data and national infrastructure.

Niccolo de Masi, chairman and CEO of IonQ, highlighted the strategic importance of stronger security frameworks.

Paul Lopata, chief quantum scientist at the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security, welcomed the collaboration. He said, "We are happy to be working together with industry leaders such as IonQ on this important program."

“We are hopeful that the results of this work will eventually be deployed into commercial systems for industry and government users to use with confidence,” Lopata added.

The SEQCURE project expands IonQ's work with federal research organizations. The company already collaborates with groups such as DARPA and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory.

IONQ Price Action: IonQ shares are trading down by 0.26% to $35.71 at publication on Tuesday.
