Vitalik proposes replacing Casper FFG with Minimmit as Ethereum's finality mechanism
Jinse Finance reported that Vitalik Buterin posted on the X platform stating that, in discussions about Ethereum's consensus mechanism, there is a proposal to replace the current finality component Casper FFG with the new Minimmit. He believes that Casper FFG uses a two-round finality mechanism (validators need to sign twice to complete "attestation" and "final confirmation"), while Minimmit requires only one round of signatures to achieve finality. As a trade-off, Minimmit's fault tolerance threshold will decrease from Casper FFG's 33% to about 17%. Although the fault tolerance ratio is reduced, Minimmit is more likely to allow the network to enter a "multi-chain competition rather than incorrect final confirmation" state in various attack or client vulnerability scenarios, a situation that is easier to recover from through community coordination. He believes that, compared to incorrect blocks being finalized, it is safer and more recoverable to have no finality for a short period, and therefore considers Minimmit to be potentially superior in terms of overall security trade-offs.
