Farewell to RBA rate reductions — get ready for two interest rate increases, beginning this May!
Shift in Australian Interest Rate Expectations
Not long ago, discussions about Australia's monetary policy focused on how many times the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) might lower interest rates during this cycle. However, after an unexpectedly high inflation report for the September quarter emerged in late October, any anticipation of rate cuts quickly disappeared, leaving financial markets in a state of uncertainty.
That uncertainty was upended by the latest employment figures released yesterday. Now, the conversation has shifted: instead of questioning whether rates will rise, the focus is on the timing of the next increase. Within a single day, futures markets adjusted sharply, with pricing rising by about 6.5 basis points. Investors are now fully expecting a 25 basis point rate hike by May.
