Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has expressed concerns that discontinuing the Poseidon hash function in the network’s ongoing upgrade process could significantly undermine the efficiency of generating cryptographic proofs. His remarks come as Ethereum developers evaluate shifting from the current state tree infrastructure to a binary tree architecture, aiming to improve scalability and streamline the integration of zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs into the protocol.
Poseidon Delivers Speed Gains in Proof Generation
Buterin highlighted that implementing Poseidon led to considerable speed improvements in generating proofs, outperforming traditional hash solutions. He stressed two critical use cases where this performance boost becomes pivotal: the first is efficient hash-based signature aggregation; the second is the rapid generation of state proofs within blocks, allowing for more seamless blockchain operations.
He outlined a model where block producers quickly prepare state proofs locally, before transmitting both the blocks and their corresponding proofs to high-capacity external providers. This approach would enable large-scale computing infrastructure to contribute to the Ethereum network within minutes, all without requiring participants to download the entire network state. Such flexibility, Buterin noted, would provide more dynamic backup possibilities and reduce the time needed for new participants to become involved.
Security Considerations and Alternative Hash Functions
Buterin advocated for continued, rigorous research into Poseidon’s cryptographic security. He also supported parallel efforts to enhance the efficiency of alternative hash functions, like BLAKE, through advances in cryptography. Expanding on his viewpoint in a statement on the X platform, he explained:
BLAKE stands out as a strong and effective option. Still, losing the efficiency edge that Poseidon offers would be a real setback—especially for signature aggregation and rapid production of state proofs, where that advantage could prove decisive.
He emphasized the importance of spurring research into novel ways to boost the efficiency of alternative hash functions. By narrowing performance gaps now, the community hopes to give developers more flexibility when it comes to potential protocol changes and future infrastructure choices without compromising on speed or security.
