Christian Klein, CEO of SAP SE, has unveiled a significant restructuring of the company's executive board, emphasizing his personal commitment to advancing artificial intelligence initiatives. This move comes as the leading European software provider faces mounting challenges from rapid technological advancements in AI.
In a recent internal message, Klein revealed that Thomas Saueressig, who currently oversees after-sales services and client implementation, will assume responsibility for the sales division. Starting April 1, Saueressig will take on the role of Chief Customer Officer.

SAP’s strategic shift comes at a time when investors are pulling back from software-as-a-service companies, concerned that AI could disrupt the sector. Recent volatility in enterprise software stocks has been fueled by the emergence of AI tools that promise to automate more business processes. According to Bloomberg, SAP has faced skepticism from customers, partners, and investors regarding the pricing and value of its flagship AI offering.
"AI is evolving at a remarkable pace, and we must evolve with it," Klein stated. "It’s time for SAP to undergo another transformation, fully embracing AI across our operations."
Over the past year, SAP’s stock price has dropped by 38%, resulting in the loss of its status as Europe’s most valuable publicly traded company.
Board member Muhammad Alam, who heads product and engineering, has decided not to extend his contract beyond March 2027 for personal reasons, as confirmed by Klein. This follows a period of high turnover on SAP’s executive board, which has prompted several shifts in leadership roles. After Chief Revenue Officer Scott Russell left in 2024, Klein temporarily took over some sales duties, which will now be transitioned to Saueressig.
SAP introduced its AI assistant, Joule, in 2023 to help users navigate complex systems and simplify tasks such as coding. However, some clients have expressed disappointment, feeling that the benefits did not justify the initial investment.
Despite this, SAP maintains that there is "strong and broad interest from customers across industries," and that adoption is progressing as anticipated.
Klein emphasized the need for SAP to revamp its product lineup, aiming to redefine how businesses operate and how users interact with Agentic AI. He also noted that SAP’s approach to selling and licensing AI solutions must shift to focus on business outcomes and deliver autonomous services, accelerating the uptake of SAP’s offerings.
